Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – 5 Easy Approaches to Deal With Borderline Personality Anger
Is Borderline Personality making your life miserable? Are you experiencing anger outbursts as a consequence of the ongoing fear of abandonment or punishment from others?
Although looking to the symptoms and the intensity of this personality disorder you may think it is not treatable, it is really not the case. Scientific studies have shown that in most cases specific mental and environmental factors during childhood are the causes. Specifically there are self-defeating cognitions and self-beliefs which developed during childhood years in a cold, uninvolved, abusive, or violent family environment.
So I would like to leave you with five simple strategies you can use immediately if one or more of the symptoms should come up.
Firstly, deep and slow breathing combined with meditation and positive affirmations are very effective on the long run to deal with the anger outbursts typical in borderline patients. By controlling your breathing you calm and relax your mind and body, and the affirmations speak directly to your subconscious mind which will act on them almost immediately. Thus anger urge will succumb almost immediately as well.
Secondly, keeping a personal diary is helping patients dump the negative thoughts, frustrations or unhappy events during the previous days. See your journal as your close friend who understands you and makes no judgments or criticize.
The third tip you can apply is to find realistic and logical reasons to sustain that the other person is not looking to abandon you or to punish you in any way. I am sure you know situations from your past where others did similar things which however weren’t negative behaviors directed to you. Try to think things from the other one’s perspective and you will see that he or she does not want to hurt you at all.
Fourthly, mental exercises are very useful to stop anger in its tracks. Just imagine how good would be to you and to your close ones if you wouldn’t act under the impulse of the moment. You may first apply the breathing exercise until you feel that anger is loosing power. Than do the mental exercise of observing, labeling, and accepting your emotions as natural. Try to not fight your emotions, but accept them, open the gates of your heart and accept their presence. After a while you will notice that those emotions will start to fade away since they have nothing to fight against – your resistance.
And the fifth tip for today is to accept and love yourself totally and unconditionally. Borderline patients have anger or fury outbursts when somebody confirms the inner belief of self-downing, self – deprecation, or the confusion about the self. Therefore it is vital to stop the self-criticizing and self-devaluation in order to not be affected by others’ negative attitudes anymore. Take the time right now if you can and write on a piece of paper five things you know logically that are positive in you. Write them down even if your subconscious mind will oppose.
These positive things should not be something like “I’m not that bad after all”, but more like “I am attentive with others”, “I am very good in my profession”, or “I am tender with my spouse”. I think you get the idea.
Got it?
Now put that paper close to your bad and read those things about you every single morning when you wake up and every night before bedtime.
I really hope this is going to help you in your endeavor against Retrieved from “http://www.articlesbase.com/self-help-articles/5-easy-approaches-to-deal-with-borderline-personality-anger-3053253.html”
